Hidden beneath the bustling streets of Kyoto flows the Misosogawa. This isn’t just any stream. It’s a vital artery a man-made waterway roughly 2.5 kilometers long.

The Misosogawa branches from the Kamogawa River. It flows under the city. Specifically it runs beneath Kamogawa Park. Then it emerges near the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Finally it rejoins the Kamogawa River. Along its path you’ll find two bridges spanning its course. These bridges play a significant role in Kyoto’s history.

The Misosogawa’s creation wasn’t accidental. Its existence is directly tied to the thriving summer festival of the Kamogawa River. During peaceful times the riverbanks provided space for entertainment. Festivals were held there. Starting in 1669 the shogunate built embankments along the Kamogawa. This significantly impacted the development of the surrounding neighborhoods. Shops and entertainment venues relocated. The result was a beautiful riverfront. The Misosogawa played a key part in this.

The river itself is quite shallow. Its depth is usually between 10 and 20 centimeters. Its banks are about 50 centimeters deep. The Misosogawa provided crucial drainage for the area. It relieved pressure on the Kamogawa. This was especially important after 1890. The completion of the electric power canal increased the Kamogawa’s water volume.

However the Misosogawa’s history is more than just drainage. The river’s right bank was particularly valued. Tea houses were built there. These tea houses were provided with water rights. The Misosogawa served a dual purpose. It was a quiet escape. It also offered a beautiful view.

But things changed. In 1917 there were complaints. The tea houses downstream were complaining. Their water supply was insufficient. The Misosogawa wasn’t just affected by the increased volume of the Kamogawa. It was also affected by development projects.

The 1935 Kamogawa flood was catastrophic. Fifteen bridges collapsed including some vital crossings on the Misosogawa. Subsequent improvements involved widening the river. This increased the flow. Unfortunately this also led to the loss of some historic tea houses and the end of their operations. But the Misosogawa remained a vital part of Kyoto’s cultural landscape. Its banks still offer a quiet beauty. Its path a secret river under the city. Its history a fascinating blend of nature and human endeavor. Today the Misosogawa still continues to flow. It is a quiet testament to Kyoto’s ever-evolving story.
