Did you know that the Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee emerged from necessity? This isn’t just a scenic spot. It’s a place born from the construction of the A5 autobahn nearly 60 years ago.

Welcome to the Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee. It is a beloved destination for both locals and visitors.

Once upon a time, this area was part of the Mooswald, rich with Kies and Schotter. As the autobahn project commenced, builders started extracting these materials. This excavation led to the creation of two lakes. The north part was formed in 1959. The south part followed in 1968. A decade later, in 1978, they were joined to form what we now know as the Opfinger See.

Today, the Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee spans 44 hectares. It plays a crucial role in local recreation and nature conservation. In 1997, a usage plan was established to balance these needs. Certain shoreline areas were redesigned during ongoing Kies extraction. A protected biotope zone was created at the north end.

The Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee’s north end is a haven for wildlife. The city of Freiburg implemented measures to enhance this area. This includes creating shallow water zones for fish spawning and bird nesting. Artificial nesting aids were added. Trees were strategically felled to allow more sunlight for amphibians.

In contrast, the Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee’s south end is designed for leisure. Here, you’ll find spacious sunbathing areas, grill spots, a beach volleyball court and slackline facilities. These amenities were added after Kies Peter extracted the last of the Kies in 2013. The area was then redeveloped to create a family-friendly bathing bay.

There is a smaller version of the Opfinger Baggersee. Locals call it the Kleine Opfinger Baggersee. It offers a quieter, more idyllic experience. The larger lake tends to be more lively especially on the southern and western meadows.

Keep in mind that the Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee is not just for us humans. It is also home to diverse bird species. An ornithological report identified 83 bird species. This includes the Eisvogel, Mittelspecht and Schwarzmilan. To protect these birds, a buffer zone of 100 meters was established around the biotope area.

The Badestrand Opfinger Baggersee has a rich history that goes beyond just being a place for summer fun. Next time you take a dip here, remember the area’s transformation from a construction necessity to a cherished natural retreat.
