A swan-shaped weather vane gracefully spins atop Svanemøllen. We are standing before a testament to Bornholm’s agricultural history. Svanemøllen, or Swan Mill, stands proudly just west of Svaneke. It is a wooden smock mill with a rich past.

Built in 1857, Svanemøllen served the community until the 1950s. Imagine Bornholm dotted with up to 30 smock mills. These mills were vital for grinding grain. Today, Svanemøllen is one of only four wooden mills remaining. What sets it apart? It is the sole listed wooden mill. It is a symbol of Bornholm’s milling heritage.

In 1855, ten influential citizens of Svaneke and Ibsker joined forces. Their goal was to build a modern smock windmill. They commissioned Christian Sommer from Rønne for the task. Sommer completed Svanemøllen in 1857.

Inside, Svanemøllen housed five grinders. Three were for flour. The others processed meal and husks. A two-story house with a cellar provided living space for the miller. Christian Sommer himself operated the mill until 1861.

Later, Hans Anker Kofoed and his son took over. They ran the mill until 1920. The Kofoeds expanded the operation. They opened a bakery in 1895. They added self-adjusting sails and a yaw system. An engine, housed in a small shed, powered Svanemøllen. During World War I, this engine even supplied Svaneke with electricity.

Sadly, both the windmill and bakery ceased operations in the 1950s. Demolition loomed in 1958. Fortunately, Svanekes Venner, the local historical society, stepped in. They purchased the mill and began extensive restoration.

Svanemøllen achieved listed building status in 1960. Since then, dedicated efforts have preserved its charm. The shingles and wind rose were replaced in the 1960s. The cap and two sails were renewed in the 1990s. The wind rose was fully repaired in 2001.

Svanemøllen stands as a reminder of Bornholm’s ingenuity. Its octagonal body is clad in oak shingles. Its ogee cap adds to its unique character. It is a testament to the craftsmanship of Christian Sommer and the dedication of Svanekes Venner.

As we conclude our visit, consider the Svanemøllen’s enduring legacy. It is a symbol of community spirit and preservation. Its sails may no longer turn. However, its story continues to inspire. It is a reminder of Bornholm’s rich agricultural past.
