Shopping redefined awaits you. Sanlitun Shopping Arcade stands as a testament to Beijing’s modern transformation. It offers a blend of international flair and local culture.

Once a simple locality Sanlitun has transformed into a vibrant hub. It all began as a village three li from Dongzhimen Gate. Sanlitun’s name literally means locality 1.5 km away from Dongzhimen Gate.

In the late 1950s Sanlitun was selected to host foreign legations and embassies. This decision marked the beginning of its international character. The area then started its economic regrowth.

The late 1970s and early 1980s brought economic reforms. Bars began to open catering to expatriates and locals. This era marked the start of Sanlitun’s nightlife scene. Accounts differ on which bar was first. Some say it was the Cat Cafe in 1995. Others claim it was Frank’s Place in 1990.

Sanlitun continued to evolve. In 1982 the first supermarket in Beijing opened here. It had an area of about 300 square meters. It sold a variety of products. By the mid-1990s the first bar on North Sanlitun Road had opened. Sanlitun now houses about 70% of Beijing’s bars.

Sanlitun Village opened in 2008. It added new shops restaurants bars and a cinema. In 2013 Sanlitun Village was renamed Taikoo Li Sanlitun. This transformation enhanced its appeal as a shopping destination.

Sanlitun is not just about shopping and nightlife. It also has educational institutions. The British School of Beijing Sanlitun Campus is here. The Pakistan Embassy College Beijing is also nearby. An Italian Kindergarten operates within the Sanlitun Diplomatic Residence Compound.

The area has faced challenges too. In April 2008 a major drug bust occurred. Several bars were closed and arrests were made. A notorious bar called Pure Girl was shut down. Its bartender and manager were executed for drug distribution. This operation was widely criticized.

In 2015 a sex tape filmed in a Uniqlo store went viral. Uniqlo denied any involvement. Later that year a sword-wielding man attacked people near the Uniqlo store. A Chinese woman was killed and her French husband was wounded.

In December 2015 foreign embassies warned of possible threats against Westerners. This followed the Paris attacks by ISIS. Citizens were urged to exercise heightened vigilance.

Sanlitun has subareas like Taikoo Li Sanlitun and Sanlitun SOHO. Topwin Center and Pacific Century Place are also significant. Nali Patio offers a Mediterranean style setting. Sanlitun Bar Street houses many bars and tea bars. 3.3 Mansion is another notable spot. The Beijing Workers’ Stadium is nearby.

A unique spot is the Sanlian Taofen Bookstore which is open 24 hours. It provides a space for reading working and drinking.

Today Sanlitun is a landmark of Beijing. It often appears in films and TV series. These include Mr Six Love Is Not Blind and A Little Reunion.
