What if I told you that Cologno Monzese is more than just a suburb of Milan? It is a place with a history stretching back to Roman times. This town played a significant role in the development of the region.

Cologno Monzese sits just northeast of Milan. It is a comune within the Metropolitan City of Milan. Its story is one of ancient origins and modern growth.

Let us step back in time to the fourth century. The Romans established a colony here. They named it Colonia super Lambrum. This means “colony above the Lambro” because it sat on the Lambro River’s left bank. “Cologno” comes from the Latin “colonia”.

Over the centuries Cologno Monzese evolved. After the Roman Empire fell the Longobards came. Their influence touched this land. The ancient church of San Giuliano bears witness. An inscription suggests it was built in 599 in honor of Queen Teodolinda. She was a Longobard queen.

During the High Middle Ages Cologno became part of the Corte di Monza. This was a clerical organization under the Archdiocese of Milan. This connection to Monza gave Cologno its full name. Before 1862 it was simply called Cologno.

The addition of “Monzese” reflects the area’s historical ties. In 1866 the towns of Malnido and Bettolino Freddo joined Cologno. Before that they belonged to Moncucco. Malnido is now known as San Maurizio al Lambro.

After World War II Cologno Monzese saw big changes. People moved here from Southern Italy. This led to significant population growth. In 1996 Cologno Monzese was granted the honorary title of city.

Today Cologno Monzese is a bustling town. It is well-connected. The Milan Metro has three stations here: Cologno Nord Cologno Centro and Cologno Sud. The Tangenziale Est motorway also provides easy access to Milan.

The coat of arms of Cologno Monzese tells a story too. It highlights two historical periods. One part shows a golden staff. This represents the Monastery of Sant’Ambrogio of Milan’s jurisdiction. The other part has gold and green colors. These come from the Trivulzio family’s coat of arms. The tower symbolizes a castle.

Cologno Monzese offers a few notable sights. Villa Casati is now the town hall. San Giuliano is a medieval Romanesque church. The Media Valle del Lambro Park also lies partly within the commune.

Palazzo Sormani is another gem. It is considered one of Cologno Monzese’s most prestigious buildings. Once owned by the Andriani family it later passed to the Sormani family.

Casa Biraga is a reminder of the past. It belonged to the Birago family a noble Milanese family. Girolamo Birago a jurist wrote comedies and poems in Milanese dialect here.

Villa Besozzi Casati has medieval origins. Benedictine monks once built a fortress here. Later the Besozzi family transformed it into their residence. Frescoes inspired by Orlando Furioso decorate the villa’s halls.

Today Cologno Monzese is also known for its media presence. The TV studios of Mediaset are located here. Several radio networks also broadcast from Cologno Monzese.

Cologno Monzese is a blend of history culture and modern life. Its journey from Roman colony to thriving city is a testament to its enduring spirit. The city continues to evolve while retaining its unique character.
