Is it true that a building can embody the spirit of a remarkable woman? Here at Ayres Hall, it certainly feels that way. This co-ed residence hall houses 40 students. It stands as a tribute to Mother Angelique Ayres. She was a co-founder of Our Lady of the Lake College. She also served as Superior General of the Congregation of Divine Providence. That was from 1943 to 1955.
Ayres Hall is more than just a place to sleep. It is a community for upperclassmen. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors call it home. Uniquely, Ayres Hall is pet-friendly. Imagine the camaraderie among students and their furry friends.
Mother Angelique Ayres’ story is inspiring. Born Claudia Ayres in 1882, she wasn’t raised Catholic. Yet, she found her calling at St. Mary’s Academy in Austin. Despite initial objections from her father, she pursued her religious vocation.
In 1900, she became a postulant with the Sisters of Divine Providence in San Antonio. She took the name Mary Angelique in 1902. By 1904, she made her first vows. Her dedication to education was unwavering. She earned a B.A. in 1912. A Master’s in English followed in 1913.
Mother Angelique and Mother Philothea Thiry co-founded Our Lady of the Lake College in 1911. It started as a junior college focused on teacher training. She taught English and math. She became the school’s first registrar and later its academic dean.
She tirelessly worked to gain accreditation for the college. Her efforts led to recognition from various prestigious associations. Under her leadership, Our Lady of the Lake developed pioneering programs. These included social work and speech and hearing.
Elected superior of her congregation in 1925, she served until 1937. In 1943, she became the first American-born superior general. She held this role for two consecutive terms. She contributed to educational journals. She also co-authored “The History of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Texas”.
Ayres Hall itself offers many amenities. There is a television lounge for relaxation. A laundry room provides convenience. An outdoor patio invites social gatherings. An outdoor swimming pool offers recreation. Even with single-occupancy rooms, extra furniture remains. This gives a sense of spaciousness.
