Founded in 1868 the Corinthian Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. A small group began meeting in homes. They yearned for a dedicated place of worship in Avondale. The Council of Baptist Churches approved their request. Their first service was held at the New Colored Orphans Home on Van Buren Street. Reverend R W Scott was their first pastor. The church initially bore the name First Baptist Church of Avondale.
The name changed to Corinthian Baptist Church. This was due to mail delivery issues. It also avoided confusion with another nearby church. Over the years thirteen pastors have led the congregation. Their dedication guided the church through many changes. The church moved in 1964. A new highway necessitated the relocation. A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the new building. It was completed in October 1964. The mortgage was paid off in 1975 a remarkable achievement.
Further expansion followed. In 1990 another groundbreaking ceremony occurred. This time for renovations and expansion. The new building was dedicated in June 1991. The mortgage on this building was also paid off. This joyous occasion happened during the 129th anniversary celebration in 1997. The church’s growth continued. In 2010 it purchased thirty acres of land in Bond Hill. A dedication and community celebration followed in 2011. Groundbreaking for a new building happened in 2016. Construction began in October 2017.
