A fireproof haven for art. That was Isaac Delgado’s dream. He envisioned a place where New Orleans’ artistic soul could thrive. That dream materialized as the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Standing before NOMA you see more than just a building. You see the legacy of a wealthy sugar broker. Isaac Delgado a philanthropist with a vision. He gifted New Orleans its oldest fine arts museum. This was in 1911. It initially opened as the Delgado Museum of Art.

Delgado’s generosity wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. It was about fostering a love for art. He wanted a space to house masterpieces. A place for exhibits and for the city’s Art Association to flourish. The City Park Board granted his wish. They gave him a prime spot. The museum opened on December 11 1911. Delgado sadly passed away soon after. His vision however lived on.

Over the years NOMA expanded. The Wisner Education Wing was added in 1970-1971. Then came a major expansion and renovation in 1993. This propelled NOMA into the top 25 percent of the nation’s largest art museums. Today NOMA stands as one of the country’s best. It showcases unique and rare exhibits.

Beyond the building itself lies the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. This eleven and a half acre oasis features over ninety sculptures. They’re nestled amongst beautiful Louisiana flora. Live oaks pines magnolias and camellias surround lagoons and bridges. There’s even a walking trail.

Hurricane Katrina brought devastation to New Orleans. Yet NOMA stood strong. Its elevated position meant most of the permanent collection survived. The flooding was limited to the basement.

NOMA’s collection is vast and impressive. It boasts over 40000 objects. These span 5000 years of art history. The collection is known for European and American works. Masterpieces by Degas Monet Renoir Picasso and O’Keeffe are just a few examples. There’s a remarkable survey of French art. It includes several works Degas painted during his time in New Orleans.

But NOMA is more than just a repository of art. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. It hosts festivals film screenings lectures and even wellness events. It partners with other local museums. It offers guided tours workshops and educational programs.

The New Orleans Museum of Art is a testament to Delgado’s vision. It’s a place where art history and contemporary culture intertwine. A place where the spirit of New Orleans’ artistic heritage thrives. It’s a place you won’t soon forget.
