Have you ever felt the wind whispering secrets through ancient wooden planks? Welcome to Kuremøllen a testament to Bornholm’s rich milling history. Standing proudly for over 160 years this wooden smock mill has witnessed generations pass.

Kuremøllen wasn’t always the majestic structure you see today. Christian Sommer built it in 1861 for himself. He had previously built the impressive Svanemøllen just a few years prior. Kuremøllen though smaller boasted a unique boat-shaped cap. It differed from Svanemøllen’s onion top and was clad in simple wooden planks not expensive oak shingles.

In 1900 Emil Sommer took over. He modernized Kuremøllen adding an engine. Clever self-adjusting flaps followed in 1903. Then a bakery opened its doors in 1912. The original cap was replaced with the iconic onion top. A fancy automatic yaw system with a fantail was added. The mill continued to evolve. A new engine was installed in 1930. New sails and a beam were added in 1940. Christian Sommer the grandson took over in 1943. He finally stopped milling in the 1950s but continued running the bakery until 1976.

Kuremøllens Venner an association was founded in 1978. This dedicated group undertook extensive restoration. A new tail was added. The shaft and sails were repaired. The tower was recently reclad. The old engine was carefully restored. During the 1993 tarpaulin renewal a fascinating discovery was made. The mill had once been clad in shingles. This was likely during its early years.

Today Kuremøllen stands as a symbol of resilience and craftsmanship. It’s a testament to the dedication of those who preserved it. You can visit this gem during the summer months. Feel the history beneath your feet. Hear the echoes of its past. Kuremøllen’s story is far from over. It continues to inspire and fascinate all who visit.
