Feel the wind whisper secrets from the past. These are the Hestestenene. Four massive stones stand guard on this 34-meter cliff. West of Gudhjem they watch the coastal path to Rønne.
The Hestestenene are bautasten. These are upright menhirs. They were erected for ritual purposes. This practice spanned from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. Around 1000 bautasten once stood on Bornholm. These four however are special. They are called the Horse Stones. Legend says they are a wedding party and their horse-drawn carriage. They plunged to their doom from the cliff. But truth is stranger. Cremation burials were found within these stones. A solemn end for an ancient mystery.
Look closely. Notice the differences in their size. One is 16 meters by 095 meters. Another measures 185 meters by 13 meters. A third is slightly smaller still. The fourth stone is a giant.
