This building, originally the Aeolian Building, constructed in 1912 for the Aeolian Piano Company, hosted Gershwin’s premiere in 1924. Years later, it was transformed into the SUNY State College of Optometry. The SUNY State College of Optometry stands as a testament to the vision of dedicated individuals who saw a need for advanced optometric education in New York. Established in 1971 by Governor Nelson Rockefeller, SUNY State College of Optometry filled the void left by the closure of Columbia University’s optometry program. The college carries a rich history, evolving from the Columbia University School of Optometry, the first university-based optometry program in the US, founded in 1910. This legacy of pioneering optometric education continues at SUNY State College of Optometry. It’s the only optometry school in the New York tri-state area, serving a population of millions. The college offers a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), a Master of Science (M.S.) in Vision Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Vision Science. They also boast a remarkable 97% pass rate for students on national board exams before graduation, a testament to the rigorous training. Each student receives over 2,400 hours of clinical experience.
