Around 1550 Elector Friedrich II built a hunting lodge and pleasure house at Wolfsbrunnen. This wasn’t just any hunting lodge. It was a luxurious retreat near Heidelberg Castle. Imagine Elector Friedrich II relaxing after a successful hunt. The Wolfsbrunnen complex included not only a grand house but also charming trout pools.

Later Frederick V expanded the Wolfsbrunnen. He married the English princess Elisabeth Stuart. They added to the romantic charm of the place. The complex became a haven for royalty and guests. The location was idyllic. It was easily accessible yet offered privacy. The princes valued their quiet time. They could easily escape the hustle and bustle of court life.

The Wolfsbrunnen complex eventually fell into disuse. The electoral princes moved their residence. Military conflicts further contributed to its decline. Its use as a hunting lodge and inn never completely stopped though. It wasn’t abandoned entirely.

Around 1800 Wolfsbrunnen experienced a revival. Romantics flocked to the area. They were charmed by its wild beauty. The place also inspired literary works. The Wolfsbrunnen’s romantic charm is evident in the writings of many authors. August Lafontaine even set a scene from his novel there. This boosted the area’s popularity. Famous writers like Heinrich von Kleist and Joseph von Eichendorff visited.

The Wolfsbrunnen was more than just a pretty place. Multiple springs around the area provide drinking water even today. The current lake below the restaurant is one of the original fish ponds. The Wolfsbrunnen’s history is rich and fascinating. It blends nature with history and literature. The restaurant reopened in 2015. It offers seasonal delicacies. The Wolfsbrunnen today is a popular spot combining history gastronomy and nature. It preserves its rich past while offering modern amenities. So here at Wolfsbrunnen we experience history charm and delicious food all in one unique location.
