Listen closely. Did you know that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe himself was baptized right here in St Catherine’s Church?

This magnificent church St Catherine’s Church is the largest Protestant church in Frankfurt am Main. It stands proudly near the Hauptwache a bustling square. Its dedication to Saint Catherine of Alexandria speaks to a rich history.

Construction of St Catherine’s Church began in 1678. It was completed in 1681 in the Baroque style. The exterior was modest. However the interior was a breathtaking Baroque masterpiece. Imagine walls adorned with 83 paintings. These depicted biblical scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. Sadly much of this was destroyed in 1944 during World War II. Allied air raids devastated the Altstadt. St Catherine’s Church was heavily damaged. Its clock stopped at 9 43 am a chilling reminder of that day.

The city of Frankfurt was determined to rebuild. The church was resurrected between 1950 and 1954. The exterior was painstakingly reconstructed. The interior however was simplified. Gone were the multiple Baroque galleries. They were replaced by a single gallery. Yet the spirit of St Catherine’s Church remained.

Seventeen stunning stained-glass windows by Charles Crodel now grace the interior. They are a testament to faith resilience and artistic beauty. The restoration of St Catherine’s Church was far from complete in 1954. Further restoration work continued well into the 21st century. In 2011 the steeple and roof were fully restored. The church’s exterior once again matches its historical appearance.

St Catherine’s Church has a rich musical heritage. Georg Philipp Telemann a renowned composer served as director of music in Frankfurt. This included leading the music at St Catherine’s Church. Today the church is home to a magnificent Rieger organ. It hosts a regular concert series. The organ’s music fills the sanctuary with beautiful sound.

St Catherine’s Church continues to serve its congregation. It’s a vibrant center for Protestant worship. It’s also a beloved landmark. It stands as a symbol of Frankfurt’s enduring spirit. More importantly it reminds us of the power of faith amidst destruction and renewal. This church offers a window into the past and a beacon for the future. A true testament to faith.
