Imagine stepping back in time. You are standing before Gamleborg. This ancient fortress whispers tales of Viking kings and forgotten battles. Built around 750 AD Gamleborg was Bornholm’s first fortification. It served as the seat of power for Bornholm’s kings during the Viking Age and early Middle Ages. Its imposing size is breathtaking. It stretches 264 meters from north to south and 110 meters from east to west. Picture its massive walls rising high. Originally they were made of rocks and boulders set in clay. North and south walls were higher reaching approximately 6 meters. Gamleborg wasn’t just a fortress. It was a refuge. It protected the islanders from Viking raids. Evidence suggests its use during the reigns of Harald Bluetooth and Canute IV. Around 1100 significant alterations were made. The fortress was reinforced. Yet soon after it was abandoned. Its inhabitants moved to Lilleborg a shorter distance away. Why the move happened is a mystery lost to history. It seems it was not due to hostility. The remains you see today are mostly from reconstruction around 1100. Archaeological digs revealed that while the main structure dates from the Viking era the site was used in the Iron Age. Gamleborg’s location on a hill was strategic. The Almindingen forest provided natural protection. The location provided natural defenses especially on the south side where cliffs rose up to 20 meters. A water pool served as the fortress’s primary water supply. The fortress had gates to the north and south. Additional protection came from moats and outer ramparts. There were various buildings for its occupants. The massive earth ramparts are still visible. The solid stone wall on the western side was 275 meters long 2 meters wide and up to 6 meters high. Gamleborg’s story is one of resilience strength and enduring mystery. It stands as a powerful symbol of Bornholm’s rich past. Its secrets remain partially hidden but its majesty is undeniable. You are standing where history unfolded. Feel the weight of the past. Let Gamleborg’s legacy fill you with wonder.
