Was it divine intervention or sheer stubbornness that led to the construction of Skt. Anna kapel? Here, amidst the tranquil serenity of Gudhjem Kirke, stand the weathered remnants of Skt. Anna kapel, a poignant reminder of Bornholm’s rich maritime past. Legend has it that a grateful count, spared from a perilous fate at sea, vowed to build a chapel dedicated to Saint Anna, the Virgin Mary’s mother. He initially attempted to erect the chapel on Nørresand, but each day’s progress mysteriously vanished overnight. Only when the construction shifted to this very spot, did the chapel finally stand, a testament to the power of choosing the right location, however persistent the obstacles. Built in the 13th-century, Skt. Anna kapel initially served as a beacon of hope for the countless fishermen who braved the treacherous waters surrounding Bornholm. The chapel, initially a Romanesque structure of modest proportions, underwent a transformation in the Middle Ages, evolving into a Gothic longhouse. Sadly, time and changing needs led to its demise. By the late 19th century, the once-proud chapel, weathered and worn, faced calls for demolition to make way for an expanded churchyard. Despite efforts to preserve it, Skt. Anna kapel met an untimely end, dynamited before its potential heritage status could be secured. Today, only these evocative ruins remain, a solemn reminder of Skt. Anna kapel’s enduring presence in the tapestry of Gudhjem’s story.
