Here in Los Angeles, have you ever stopped to consider how art can transform a space? Imagine thousands of colorful spheres floating on the water. That is the story of the Giant Ball art installation at MacArthur Park.

The Giant Ball project, officially named “The Spheres of MacArthur Park”, was the brainchild of brothers Ed and Bernie Massery. They are native Angelinos. Their non-profit, Portraits of Hope, organized the project. Their goal was to revitalize MacArthur Park. They hoped to reintroduce this historic area to the people of Los Angeles.

In 2015, about 2,500 giant beach balls were released into the lake. These were not ordinary beach balls. Each Giant Ball ranged from four to six feet in diameter. They were hand-painted by approximately 10,000 volunteers. Schoolchildren and charitable organizations participated. The balls displayed vibrant images of flowers and fish.

Mayor Eric Garcetti praised the project. He highlighted the weather, open space, creativity, and social conscience of Los Angeles. Bernie Massey noted the location. He talked about the lake in the middle of the city, with the downtown skyline in the distance. The aim was to encourage people to think about a significant cultural monument.

Ed Massey reminisced about his childhood visits to the park. He remembered going on paddle boats. Sadly, the paddle boats were no longer available due to budget cuts. The area had also faced issues with gang violence. The “Spheres” project was a positive change. It drew visitors from across Los Angeles.

Volunteers gained knowledge about art, teamwork, and civic engagement. They also learned about the history of their city. Vista Paint donated waterproof acrylic paints. These paints ensured the artwork would last in the water. Engineering firms and shipping services aided with logistics. Charitable groups and foundations provided funds. The estimated cost would have been around $1.5 million without these donations.

Portraits of Hope had completed other installations. They decorated lifeguard towers and Beverly Hills High School’s oil derrick.

María Castro, a long-time visitor to MacArthur Park, praised the Giant Ball installation. She felt the park had become grubbier over the years. The spheres, however, improved its appearance.

The Giant Ball installation was festive and beautiful. It showcased how public art can transform a space. It brought joy and renewed interest to a historic Los Angeles park. The Giant Ball project served as a reminder. It highlighted the potential of community engagement and artistic expression.
