In 1977, a small row house at 4520 Penn Street in Philadelphia held the seeds of what would become the Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia. It began with just six people: Mr. Silvanus Christian, Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Patricia Christian, Mr. Dinker and Mrs. Martha Taylor, and Mr. Richard Christian. The Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia’s early gatherings offered a haven for Gujarati Christians, new to the United States. These meetings provided spiritual comfort in their native language and practical support navigating a new culture. The Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia quickly outgrew the row house. They moved their biweekly services to the Salvation Army church at 4544 Frankford Avenue, and later to the United Methodist Church on 1515 Orthodox Street. The congregation continued to expand. Pastors from near and far came to preach, and the services shifted from biweekly to weekly. New activities blossomed, including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, outreach programs, a women’s ministry, and a choir. The growth of the Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia is a testament to the community’s deep faith and the power of shared language and culture. In 2005, the Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia found its permanent home at 425 Central Avenue in Cheltenham. This church building may be small, but it holds a large place in the hearts of the congregation. It’s a place where they celebrate God’s presence through worship and prayer, demonstrate God’s love through fellowship and shepherding, communicate God’s word through preaching, and educate God’s people through Bible study. Today, the Gujarati Christian Fellowship of Philadelphia stands as one of the largest Gujarati churches in North America. It’s a vibrant community of around 70 families, united by their faith and their Gujarati heritage. They continue to offer services in Gujarati every Sunday at 12:30 PM, occasionally incorporating English. They invite everyone to join them in service, Bible study, and prayer meetings.
