The story of the Ryerss Museum begins with Joseph Waln Ryerss. He was a railroad tycoon and merchant. Ryerss traveled extensively to China, Japan, and England. During his travels, he gathered art and artifacts. These pieces eventually filled his Philadelphia home. This home was initially known as Burholme.
Joseph Ryerss built Burholme in 1859. It sat on one of the highest points in the area. After Joseph and his wife passed, their son Robert inherited the home. Robert continued his father’s trading business. He also expanded the family’s collection.
Robert Ryerss later willed the home to his wife, Mary Ann Reed. She had also been his longtime housekeeper. His will stipulated that the home should become a park and museum for the city. It was to be free in perpetuity.
Mary Ann and her second husband, Reverend John Bawn, further enriched the collection. In 1905, they turned the home over to the city. The Ryerss Museum and Library opened its doors in 1910.
