A century of faith. That’s what this building whispers. Saint John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church stands before you a testament to resilience. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living story etched in brick and stained glass.

Saint John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Detroit opened its doors in 1907. Founded by a community of Ukrainian immigrants seeking solace and connection in a new land. They built a small wooden church on Cicotte Street. This wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a sanctuary a piece of home amidst unfamiliar surroundings.

The original church wasn’t the imposing structure we see today. Years of growth and devotion led to the construction of a grander church in 1918. This building reflected their flourishing community. Its Byzantine-influenced domes are a clear sign of their Eastern heritage. The church’s architecture blended their Ukrainian identity with their adopted American home.

But the journey wasn’t always smooth. In August 2001 a devastating fire threatened to consume Saint John’s. A short circuit in the sacristy started the blaze. The fire quickly spread but miraculously the church bells began ringing. This unexpected alarm alerted neighbors who called the fire department. The bells saved the church from total destruction.

The fire damaged the sacristy and the apse. Despite the devastation the community rallied. They rebuilt their beloved church. The newly restored Saint John’s was blessed in 2002. It stands as a symbol of unwavering faith resilience and community spirit. The church is a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people. Today Saint John’s continues to serve as a spiritual heart for Detroit’s Ukrainian community. It’s a place where faith is celebrated tradition is honored and history is kept alive. A place where the echoes of a century of prayer resonate.
