Yunding Stone Wall was built in 1243. General Yu Zhen of the Southern Song Dynasty ordered its construction. Its purpose? To fend off the Mongol army. This strategic mountain city had eight gates. Each was built on cliffs and precipices. Most of the city used the mountain’s natural defenses. Where there were gaps, stone walls rose. These walls featured battlements and gun emplacements. Imagine soldiers defending this very spot.
Within the walls, eighteen wells provided water. Thirty-two pools collected it. The entire stone city was high and hard to capture. Today, the North Gate and Changning Gate still stand. About 5,000 square meters of ancient buildings remain. They whisper stories of a bygone era.
