What if I told you that Madrid’s airport holds a secret? It is a haven for aviation enthusiasts. This is the Mirador Barajas T4. Opened in 2022 this viewpoint offers a unique experience. Very few people know about it.

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is like a small city. It has bars and restaurants. You can find work areas and pharmacies there. Duty-free shops offer fashion and beauty products. The airport dedicates 138000 square meters to leisure and dining. Madrid-Barajas is among the world’s busiest airports. The Airports Council International ranks it among the top 20.

But there is more than meets the eye. The Mirador Barajas T4 caters to those who love aeronautical photography. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys watching planes take off. This spotter area provides a panoramic view of Terminal 4. You can also see the Control Tower from here. You can watch both international and domestic aircraft. Passenger planes and cargo carriers pass by.

The Mirador Barajas T4 features 2100 square meters. It has benches for comfortable viewing. Artificial lighting makes it accessible at different hours. A security fence ensures safety. Keep in mind there are no food stands nearby. Bring snacks and drinks if you plan to stay for a while.

Getting to the Mirador Barajas T4 is straightforward by car. Drive to the Iberia ring road. Find the security checkpoint of the Alamán school. You will see five parking spaces there. Visit the accreditation booth to get your free spotter card. With the card you can join the other plane enthusiasts.

The Mirador Barajas T4 has specific opening hours. From June 15 to September 15 it is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The rest of the year the hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

More than 1000 photography fans visited in the first month and a half after its opening. Despite the summer heat and security fences people come to enjoy the view. Spotters often bring equipment like cameras and aluminum ladders. They seek to capture unique aircraft. One fan commented “This is a joy”.

To visit you must register at the main entrance in a prefabricated building called PR central. It is 18 kilometers from Madrid’s center. An employee in a fluorescent vest controls access to the restricted area. A gravel path with security cameras leads to the Mirador Barajas T4.

The viewing platform covers 132 square meters. A railing provides a safe barrier. Two trees offer shade and there are wooden camping tables for comfort. Some spotters bring sophisticated equipment. They use apps to track air traffic. They monitor flight details such as time location model origin and destination. This information helps them find new planes for their collections.

“We call ourselves aerotrastornados” says Germán Llaullón. He describes aviation enthusiasts who range from casual viewers to serious collectors. Before the Mirador Barajas T4 existed fans had to find less accessible spots. They often faced scrutiny from security personnel.

The Asociación AIRE with 400 members advocated for this space for six years. The project was approved in 2018. The pandemic delayed progress. Now the Mirador Barajas T4 offers a dedicated space. Unlike some other airports in Spain Barajas now caters to spotters.

Capturing planes became popular in the early 2000s with the rise of digital photography. Before that enthusiasts exchanged negatives like trading cards. Now they share photos on social media. Since 2012 organized open days have allowed closer access to the planes.

AENA reports that the Mirador Barajas T4 has been a boom. It provides a special way to experience aviation. Now you know the secret of Madrid-Barajas. Come and see the planes take flight.
