Chashama. A name whispered with reverence among New York City’s artists. It’s a Persian word meaning “to have vision.” Chashama truly embodies this meaning. It transforms unseen, unused spaces into vibrant hubs of creativity. Right here, in this city of dreams, Chashama carves out sanctuaries for artists who might otherwise be lost in the whirlwind.

Chashama was founded in 1995 by Anita Durst. She sought to honor the legacy of theater visionary Reza Abdoh and address a critical need within the New York art scene: affordable space. The organization began by focusing on theatrical productions. It quickly recognized that the lack of affordable space posed the biggest threat to New York City’s diverse cultural environment. Chashama’s mission then evolved to encompass visual arts, providing studios, exhibition spaces, and free community art classes.

Chashama has partnered with property owners across the five boroughs, breathing life back into vacant properties. These collaborations create a win-win situation. Artists gain access to much-needed space, and property owners see increased foot traffic and revitalized neighborhoods. Chashama has awarded an astounding $11 million worth of real estate to artists. It subsidizes 300 artist workspaces and offers over 215 free art classes. It gives 200 artists free space to present their work and supports over 75 businesses with free space. Think about the sheer number of creative endeavors nurtured by this organization.

Initially, Chashama’s efforts were concentrated in Midtown Manhattan, particularly on 42nd Street. Over 700 shows were presented in those early years. Now, Chashama’s reach extends far beyond Midtown. It continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the city’s artistic community. Currently, Chashama presents 150 events a year and provides workspaces for 120 artists. It has also developed 80 workshops in underserved communities. This speaks volumes about Chashama’s commitment to equitable access to the arts.

One Chashama studio artist, Nancy Elsamanoudi, said “The New York art world would not be what it is without the support that artists have received from Chashama.” She continued “So many artists I admire have had a connection to Chashama.” Many benefited from the Space to Present program or found studio space through Chashama’s initiatives.

Chashama’s story is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. It is a reminder that art thrives when given space to breathe, grow, and connect with the community. Chashama isn’t just about providing space. It’s about fostering a vibrant ecosystem where artists can create, connect, and inspire. It’s about making the arts accessible to everyone.
