Gazing at Müllner Kirche, can you sense the echoes of ancient rituals? This hill, overlooking the Salzach River in the Műlln district, held spiritual significance even before Christianity. Müllner Kirche stands as a testament to centuries of faith and change. Originally a pre-Christian worship site, a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary likely existed here as early as 1048. This chapel eventually became inadequate for the growing community. Construction of the Late Gothic hall church we see today began in 1439, with consecration in 1453. Archbishop Johann II von Reisberg initiated this project, with Ulrich Dankl and Heinrich Murauer serving as the master builders. The church’s basic Gothic structure remains, a tangible link to Salzburg’s medieval past. However, Müllner Kirche has also embraced transformation. In the 18th century, the church underwent a Baroque makeover, further enriching its character. The church’s exterior, with its unassuming entrance guarded by two lion heads, belies the grandeur within. Inside, a striking high altar of red marble commands attention. This altar houses the revered Late Gothic statue of the Madonna with Child, created around 1460 and believed to possess miraculous powers. Look up and admire the ornate pulpit and the two-story music gallery, spanning the entire hall. The tall Gothic tower, crowned by its distinctive helm and double-lantern spire, stands as a symbol of the church’s enduring presence. Adjacent to Müllner Kirche, the tranquil cemetery, reopened in 2017 after nearly 140 years, beckons. Known as “Heaven’s Terrace,” this historic resting place offers panoramic views of Salzburg’s historic district. For 500 years, it served as the burial ground for the monastery’s monks, their remains interred in the columbaria. Within the cemetery, you’ll discover the Chapel of the Cross, built in 1709. Müllner Kirche’s story intertwines ancient spirituality, medieval craftsmanship, and Baroque artistry. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring power of faith and the ever-evolving nature of sacred spaces.
