Let’s step back to the beginning of the pandemic. While the world was reeling from lockdowns, members of a sister church Vértice Seventh-day Adventist Church in Monterrey asked themselves what they could do. They chose the La Realidad Community to focus on. This community of almost 400 people found themselves in need.

The members of Vértice Seventh-day Adventist Church began distributing food baskets and school supplies in April 2020. This was the start of the “Padrinos” project. Nilce Coronel, the project director, explained that the initial goal was to help families affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Initially only 10 food baskets were handed out.

Word spread about the community’s needs. Soon, thanks to donations from church members and friends, the distribution grew to 80 families. The Vértice Church wanted to build friendships to show God’s love to the children and the entire community. Their goal was a complete worship experience practically sharing Christ’s gospel. This meant leaving their comfort zones to help others like Jesus did.

The pandemic presented challenges. Lockdown rules and the risk of infection threatened the project. But the members looked beyond these difficulties. They focused on those in greater need. They believed that God would provide what was needed during these difficult times. Members and friends of the church worked together. They donated bought supplies and packed food and school kits.

Jorge Dzul, lead pastor of Vértice Adventist Church, saw the project as a blessing. He noted that it was an example for others. Helping those in need brought great satisfaction, just as Jesus taught.

The “Padrinos” project continued to evolve. The next phase focused on health needs. They planned to offer health services and teach values to children. Recreational activities were planned as well.
