“Ponder this. What if the streets beneath our feet whispered tales of farmers and factories?” Welcome to Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul a neighborhood in Montreal. It is a place where the echoes of rural life meet the clang of industry.

Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul’s story began in 1662. The Sulpician Order granted the concession of cu00f4te Saint-Paul. This area stretched from where we stand now past the Lachine Canal. It reached as far north as Lac u00e0 la Loutre. Back then, this was an agricultural area. Farms and fields dominated the landscape.

That all changed when the Lachine Canal cut through the area in 1825. The canal bisected Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul. Lac u00e0 la Loutre was drained. The canal brought water power for factories. Workers flocked here. A community began to form. It was a triangle of land. It was bounded by the Lachine Canal Rue Angers and Avenue de l’u00c9glise.

In 1874 the village of Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul was founded. Soon after in 1875 the first u00c9glise Saint-Paul was built. A town hall and railway station followed. But Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul didn’t stay whole for long. In 1878 the western part separated. It became the Parish Municipality of Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul. It was later named Ville-u00c9mard. The remaining part of Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul became a town in 1894. It was renamed Saint-Paul in 1897.

By 1910 Saint-Paul merged into the city of Montreal. This happened at the same time as Ville-u00c9mard. Industrial development continued. The remaining farms became housing. The St Lawrence Seaway caused a decline in the Lachine Canal area. In 1964 the Du00e9carie Expressway and the Turcot Interchange tore through old Saint-Paul. But the institutional buildings along Avenue de l’u00c9glise were spared. In 1978 the Montreal Metro reached Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul. The Jolicoeur metro station was built.

Today Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul is part of the borough of Le Sud-Ouest. The neighborhood’s western limit is not precisely defined. It has expanded since its days as an independent town. This is due to the building up of agricultural land. The destruction of the town’s center also played a part.

The neighborhood is bordered by Desmarchais Boulevard to the south. Monk Boulevard borders it to the west. To the east is the aqueduct. The Lachine Canal and the railroad track bordering Pointe-Saint-Charles are to the north. You can reach Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul via the De La Vu00e9rendrye exit on Quebec Autoroute 15.

Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul has a population of 16403. It covers an area of 2.84 square kilometers. The population density is 5775.70 people per square kilometer.

Parc de La Vu00e9rendrye and Parc Saint-Paul offer recreation. The Aqueduc and Lachine Canal bicycle paths are linked. They connect through the Cu00f4te Saint-Paul industrial area east of the Du00e9carie Expressway.

Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul is a neighborhood of Montreal. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. From its agricultural roots to its industrial growth Cu00f4te-Saint-Paul has a rich history.
