Consider the story of St. Monika a beacon of hope. She is known for her unwavering perseverance in prayer. The Catholic Church honors St. Monika every August 27th. She was the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, a Doctor of the Church.
St. Monika’s life is truly inspiring. Her faith shows God’s incredible power. Even though she was a Christian, her parents married her to a pagan named Patritius. He and his mother had bad tempers. Yet St. Monika met their anger with patience and kindness. Her example led to their conversion to Christianity.
Her son Augustine lived a life of immorality. He was consumed by lust before converting to Catholicism. For seventeen years, St. Monika prayed for Augustine. She endured great suffering during this time. Augustine rejected her many times. Still, she loved, prayed for, and supported her son throughout his journey.
Discouragement often weighed on her. But she never gave up. God affirmed her faith in dreams. Once, she dreamed she was weeping for Augustine. A figure reassured her he was still with her. Augustine himself wrote about it in his Confessions. The figure told St. Monika to have peace. “See that where she was there I was also,” the figure said.
A local bishop also encouraged St. Monika. He told her, “God’s time will come.” He added, “Go now, I beg you; it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish.” St. Monika knew her purpose. Her greatest desire was Augustine’s conversion to Catholicism. Once it happened, she felt her earthly purpose was complete. Shortly before her death, she told Augustine, “My son, speaking of myself, nothing earthly delights me any longer. I do not know why I am still here or why I should remain here. I have no further earthly desires.”
Today, St. Monika is the patron saint of wives and mothers. She is also the patron saint of conversions, alcoholics, and abuse victims. Her life reminds us that God’s grace is endless. He never abandons us. Even in the hardest times.
