“Shoden-ji Temple, a place of rebirth,” our guide began, his voice echoing slightly in the quiet air. Right before us stood the 吉祥山 正伝護国禅寺 Stele, a silent sentinel to the temple’s turbulent past. This unassuming stele, marking the Shoden-ji Temple, tells a story of destruction, renewal and resilience. Founded in 1273 by the esteemed monk, Tōshō Jinson, Shoden-ji was no stranger to turmoil. Ravaged by fire during the Onin War in the 15th century, the temple’s fate seemed uncertain. Yet, with the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1585, it was granted a lifeline. Hideyoshi, in a gesture of support, issued a directive that led to the temple’s revival. He authorized land surrounding the temple to be demarcated and protected, ultimately paving the way for its reconstruction. Today, Shoden-ji Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, rising from the ashes of adversity to offer a haven of peace and reflection.
