Ever wonder how a small bingo hall evolved into a premier casino resort? That’s the story of Sycuan. It all started in 1983. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation opened the Sycuan Bingo Palace. Their goal was simple. They wanted to secure jobs, housing, and infrastructure for their reservation.

The Sycuan Band’s history stretches back much further. For over 12,000 years, the Kumeyaay people have lived in the foothills of the Dehesa Valley. They are the original inhabitants of this land. Their lineage traces back to the San Dieguito Paleo Indians around 10,000 B.C.

Fast forward to today, and Sycuan is more than just a casino. It is a symbol of the Sycuan Band’s self-reliance and success. The Sycuan Casino Resort boasts world-class accommodations. You’ll find live entertainment, gaming, and diverse dining options. There is also a full-service spa and the only 3-pool venue in San Diego.

But the story of Sycuan is not just about gaming and entertainment. It is about community and giving back. Revenues from Sycuan’s enterprises fund tribal programs. They support a medical and dental center. They even support fire and police departments. These services benefit the entire community.

The Sycuan Band demonstrates its commitment to the wider San Diego region. It supports many civic and charitable organizations. The tribe is reinvesting in the community through business development. The Sycuan Band co-owns San Diego FC, a Major League Soccer team. They purchased the U.S. Grant Hotel and developed other commercial properties.

Councilmember Nathan LaBrake says sharing resources is part of Kumeyaay culture. Sycuan remembers when they were on the receiving end of generosity. Now, they extend a helping hand to their neighbors.

The Sycuan Institute on Tribal Gaming at San Diego State University is supported by the Sycuan band. Kumeyaay Community College was created by the Sycuan Band. It supports cultural identity and self-determination for native students. Sycuan stands as a testament to the vision and determination of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. It is a place where history, culture, and community come together.
