“Imagine a place where history whispers secrets through aged stones” The First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans stands before you a testament to resilience faith and a city’s enduring spirit. Founded in 1818 it’s the oldest Presbyterian congregation in Louisiana the second oldest Protestant church in the entire Mississippi Basin.

This isn’t just a church it’s a living chronicle. Picture its first humble beginnings. A public meeting a subscription list citizens pledging gifts the city council donating land. The cornerstone of the original building on St Charles Avenue was laid in 1819. Its first minister Rev Sylvester Larned a gifted orator tragically died of yellow fever at just 24.

The church faced trials fires hurricanes. A spectacular blaze in 1854 destroyed the first building. A 1915 hurricane devastated its replacement on Lafayette Square. Each time though the congregation rebuilt stronger its faith unwavering. The current Gothic Revival structure a magnificent brick and limestone building is the result of tireless rebuilding and dedication.

The spire reaching for the heavens served as a unique landmark a city bell tower. General Benjamin Butler during the Civil War occupation even used its bell to sound curfew. During this era Dr Benjamin Morgan Palmer served as pastor. A powerful figure he played a crucial role in Louisiana’s secession from the Union. He later led the fight against the corrupt Louisiana State Lottery.

The First Presbyterian Church faced further challenges. Its Lafayette Square building was sold to the government in 1938 making way for a federal office building. The congregation salvaged what it could. The organ bell pews stained glass windows communion table and lectern all found new homes in the present church building dedicated in 1939.

This church on South Claiborne Avenue didn’t just survive Hurricane Katrina in 2005 it became a beacon of hope. It served as a hub for rebuilding the Broadmoor neighborhood a testament to its enduring commitment to the community. It’s a place where the past is honored and the future embraced a progressive church championing racial justice social justice and gender equality.

From its conservative past to its modern progressive stance this remarkable institution has undergone profound changes. It went from barring African Americans in the 1860s to embracing diversity. It became Louisiana’s first More Light Presbyterian Church welcoming LGBTQ+ leadership. This church’s story is one of survival resilience and faith.
