Kyoto’s Ikedashi Higashi Elementary School. Did you know this school has a motto? “Strive, Children reaching out to each other.” Ikedashi Higashi Elementary, nestled in Kyoto’s Fukumi Ward, first opened its doors as Ikedashi Elementary School East Branch in 1983. Just a year later, in April 1984, it gained independence and became Kyoto Shiritsu Ikedashi Higashi Elementary School. Imagine the excitement of those early days. A brand new school, full of promise and potential. The school grounds were still young, but in 1985, a tree planting ceremony transformed the landscape. 450 saplings took root, promising shade and beauty for future generations. Over the years, Ikedashi Higashi Elementary has continually evolved. A breeding hut and observation pond appeared in the courtyard in 1988. The school embraced modern learning with renovations to the athletic land in 1990. A playground and a disaster prevention net followed in 1992, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the students. In 1993, a cooler was installed, offering respite from the summer heat. The same year, the school celebrated its 10th anniversary. A green land was added to the south side of the school grounds in 1994. Security enhancements arrived in 1996 with a crime-prevention fence along the southern wall. A multipurpose room and playground equipment were also added. As technology advanced, Ikedashi Higashi Elementary kept pace. A compost container was installed in 1998, promoting environmental awareness. A “Fureai Salon” (Japanese-style room) provided a traditional space in 1999, and a special needs class was established. Night lighting was completed in 2000, extending the usability of the school grounds. Pool painting and south school building toilet renovations took place in 2001. A rainwater tank appeared in 2002, further emphasizing ecological responsibility. The school celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2003 with a special Kyoto Philharmonic Orchestra performance. Security was further enhanced with a front gate security camera in 2004, and a two-term school year was implemented. A wind power generator was installed in 2005, demonstrating the school’s commitment to sustainability. In 2006, the school’s internal network was upgraded, connecting classrooms and resources. The “Ikedashi Heart Plan” was launched by the school management council in 2007, outlining the school’s vision for the future. A lunchroom and PTA homepage were created in 2008, enhancing communication and community building. Handwashing facilities were also added to the school grounds. In 2009, an after-school learning classroom was established, and the courtyard biodiversity area was completed. Broadcast equipment was updated, and solar power generation was introduced on the north school building roof in 2010. The cheerleading club also became active. The library underwent major renovations in 2012, providing a modern learning environment. The school marked its 30th anniversary in 2013, celebrating three decades of growth and achievement. In 2018, the school reverted to a three-term system, adapting to the changing needs of its students. Ikedashi Higashi Elementary continues to stand as a testament to the power of community and dedication to education.
