Across the fields of South Trumpington, whispers of ancient settlements linger. South Trumpington, a relatively new civil parish, was created in 2017. It carries within its boundaries the echoes of a rich past. This land, once part of Haslingfield parish, stretches east of the River Cam. Its borders are defined by the current Cambridge city council boundary and the M11 motorway. But long before these modern demarcations, South Trumpington held a different significance. It was a place where Iron Age and Roman communities thrived near the river crossings. Their traces remain in discovered cemeteries and scattered artifacts. The name Trumpington itself speaks to a Saxon heritage, hinting at a community that farmed these lands centuries ago. In the Domesday Book of 1086, a village of 33 peasants is recorded here. This agricultural heart continued to beat into the 20th century, shaping the landscape and lives of those who called Trumpington home. One of the most significant archaeological discoveries in recent times occurred here in South Trumpington. In 2012, a remarkable 7th-century Anglo-Saxon bed burial was unearthed. The burial contained the remains of a young woman, adorned with a stunning gold pectoral cross. This intricate cross, inlaid with garnets, suggests a connection to a wealthy aristocratic family or perhaps a previously unknown monastic settlement nearby. This find highlights the hidden depths of South Trumpington’s history, revealing a story of wealth, faith, and community in the Anglo-Saxon era. The echoes of this past are interwoven with the modern developments that now characterize South Trumpington. New housing and community facilities have sprung up, transforming the landscape and bringing new life to this historic land. As you stand here, imagine the layers of history beneath your feet. South Trumpington, a place where the past and present meet, invites you to explore its rich tapestry of stories.
