Remember Bruno Lösches name. He was the city councillor who championed public libraries in Tiergarten from 1946 to 1963. This library before us, the Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek, bears his name in honor.

Opened in 1964, the Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek has been a vital part of the Moabit community. It stands as a testament to the power of accessible knowledge. Magdalena and Gerd Hänska designed this building. They are also known for designing the Mäusebunker.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek started its journey on January 16, 1946. It was initially a public library on Bochumer Straße. In 1952, it moved to the Tiergarten Town Hall. The current building opened on December 10, 1964. It served as the main branch of the Tiergarten City Library. After the district reform in 2001, it became a central library.

Inside the Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek, over 65,000 items await discovery. This includes 18,000 audio-visual and digital media. You can find 91 different magazines and newspapers.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek actively engages with the community. It partners with the Moabiter Ratschlag initiative. Together, they created BuKi which means Bildung im Kiez. This project supports literacy for young children and their families. BuKi uses a repurposed book bus as a mobile creative workshop.

In 2014, the Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek celebrated its 50th anniversary. The celebration included speeches, music, and readings. Stephan Hänel read humorous stories.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek serves as a communication and information hub. It provides access to diverse information. This empowers citizens to navigate an increasingly complex world. It promotes cultural participation and lifelong learning. The children’s and youth library focuses on reading skills and media literacy.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek boasts a Krimisalon. It has over 6,000 crime novels, audiobooks, and films. A reading garden provides a relaxing space for reading.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek is part of the Public Libraries Berlin network. Customers can access 6.7 million items from other libraries in Berlin.

The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek faced a possible relocation. There were plans to construct a new building on Turmstraße. It would be a hybrid project shared with the Justice Department. Due to financial constraints, the project was cancelled. The library remains in its current location. The building is now owned by a private investor. They plan to demolish it after the library moves and replace it with housing. The Bruno-Lösche-Bibliothek continues to serve its community despite these challenges. It remains a place of learning, discovery, and connection for all.
