Ever wonder what it takes to build a university in the midst of the Great Depression? Right here, at Lawrence Technological University, that audacious dream became a reality. In 1932, Russell E. Lawrence, fueled by an unshakeable belief in the future, founded Lawrence Tech. He envisioned a place where anyone, regardless of background, could receive a quality education, a principle that Lawrence Technological University still upholds. The university’s initial home was in Highland Park, in a building leased from none other than Henry Ford himself. It was situated next to the very factory where the iconic Model T was born. Lawrence Technological University started as a small college of engineering with a few hundred students. Now, it’s a thriving university with over 100 programs across four colleges, a testament to its enduring mission. Lawrence Tech’s growth is also reflected in its campus. From its humble beginnings in Highland Park, it moved to its current 107-acre campus in Southfield in 1955. This sprawling campus boasts 17 major buildings, showcasing the university’s continuous expansion. A fascinating piece of history is also connected to Lawrence Tech: the “Spirit of Lawrence Tech” airplane. This unique aircraft, built by students in the late 1940s, was designed for national air races. After a meticulous restoration, it now hangs proudly in the Buell Management Building. Lawrence Tech has also seen a resurgence in athletics. In 2011, it rejoined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, supporting numerous men’s and women’s teams. This vibrant athletic program contributes to the dynamic campus life, offering students a well-rounded educational experience. From its Depression-era origins to its modern campus, Lawrence Technological University stands as a symbol of innovation and opportunity.
