Strolling along Cartagena’s historic city walls transports you to another era. Cartagena de Indias holds stories of conquistadors and pirates. It tells of battles fought for Colombia’s independence.

Founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena became a vital trading post. Spanish treasures plundered from Indigenous people passed through this port. This attracted buccaneers and pirates. Sir Francis Drake famously sacked Cartagena. He demanded a bribe of 10 million pesos to spare the town.

The Spanish built forts to protect the city. In 1741, Blas de Lezo defended against 25000 English soldiers and 186 ships. He had only one arm, one leg, and one eye. Cartagena honors him with a statue outside San Felipe Fortress. It was erected in 2009.

Sadly, the slave trade also shaped Cartagena’s development. The King of Spain granted a monopoly on this commerce. Cartagena became an official slave-trading center.

Cartagena was among the first to declare independence from Spain. Simón Bolívar secured independence in 1821. Cartagena is now known as “La Heroica.” It means the Heroic City.

Today, Cartagena thrives. It attracts foreign immigrants and tourists. It is Colombia’s largest port and a major industrial center. The old walled city retains its charm. Stone buildings reflect its rich architectural heritage.
