Gethsemane Baptist Church

“A prayer band in a beauty shop?” you might ask. That’s exactly how Gethsemane Baptist Church’s story began. On August 12, 1951, twelve souls gathered in a Pleasantville Shopping Center beauty shop, led by Reverend S. J. Johnson. From this unlikely setting, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church was born. These founders weren’t just dreaming of sermons and hymns. They were laying the foundation for a community. The original charter members included Rev. and Sis. Shepherd J. Johnson, Sis. Mattie Davis, Bro. Daniel Franklin, Bro. Willie Randall, Bro. Bernie Robertson, Sis. Estella Sagers, and several members of the White family: Sis. Alma, Sis. Bertha, Sis. Cora, Bro. Grant, and Bro. Reuben. Just a few months later, in January 1952, the fledgling congregation purchased land at 1621 Pleasantville Drive for $3,500. They began holding services in the unfinished structure by August 1952, a testament to their dedication. Gethsemane Baptist Church continued to grow, even as pastors changed. Rev. Johnson served until 1953, followed by Rev. J. C. Wilson and then Rev. H. A. Ratcliff, Jr. Under Rev. Ratcliff, a new edifice was dedicated at the Pleasantville Drive location in 1962. In 1964, Rev. Hayward Edward Joseph Wiggins became pastor. He led Gethsemane Baptist Church for an impressive 33 years. During his tenure, the church experienced remarkable growth, both spiritually and in its membership. Many new ministries were established, reflecting the expanding needs and outreach of the church. Rev. Wiggins also had a grand vision: to relocate Gethsemane to its current location at 8775 Flagship Drive. This vision involved purchasing land in 1985 at Loop 610 and Flagship Drive. It also included plans for a sanctuary, a family-life center, an educational building, a Christian learning center, and even a tower for senior citizens. Although Rev. Wiggins passed away in 1997 before the relocation was complete, his legacy lived on. The new Gethsemane Baptist Church was dedicated in October 1997, a testament to his vision and the dedication of the congregation. The church continued to thrive under the leadership of its fifth pastor, Rev. Dennis Carl Jones, who arrived in 1998. Under Pastor Jones, the cornerstone for the church was laid in 1999. The Dr. Hayward Wiggins Multi-Purpose Center, honoring the late pastor, was also dedicated that year. Gethsemane Baptist Church remains a vibrant part of the Houston community. From its humble beginnings in a beauty shop, it has grown into a beacon of faith and service, its history echoing the dedication and vision of its founders and its pastors.
