Do you see that building before us? That is Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo. It is more than just a church. It’s a testament to faith, community, and a journey that began with one man’s calling.
Pastor Teodoro Carreras answered God’s call. He and his family lived in Bridgeport Connecticut. He was pastoring different churches like Iglesia Cristiana el Buen Pastor and Iglesia Casa de Oración. In 1969, his brothers Victor and Pedro Carreras invited him. They wanted him to start a ministry in Los Ángeles.
After prayer and consideration, Pastor Teodoro moved to Los Ángeles with his family. Once settled, he held the first service in 1969. The church was initially named Iglesia Cristiana Pentecostal. His brother Pedro gifted him a vehicle. It transported the first members.
After six years, the congregation grew significantly. They needed a larger space. They acquired the current location. At the request of Anglo members they bought the temple from, the name changed. It became Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo.
In 1985, the church established “Instituto Biblico El Tabernáculo”. This institute produced missionaries, teachers, and preachers. They spread the word of God.
Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo started small. Over the years, it has grown into a dedicated congregation. They love their work. They are committed to serving the community. Various ministries thrive here. These include evangelism, Sunday school and groups for men, women, youth, and children.
Pastor Rev. Teodoro Carreras was born in Río Grande Puerto Rico. He came to the United States at age 12. After high school, he earned a theology degree. He got it from Colegio del Caribe de las Asambleas de Dios in 1963. He ministered at Iglesia Casa de Oración for two years. Then he came to Los Ángeles to found Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo. He obtained a master’s degree in divinity from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena in the 1990s.
His wife Pastora Irma Carreras was born in El Salvador. She received the Lord in the Iglesia Bautista. She studied at El Camino College. She earned a bachelor’s degree at California State University Dominguez Hills. She also studied at Instituto Bíblico de Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo. She teaches elementary school. She has ministered as a Sunday School teacher for years.
Iglesia Nuevas de Gozo is affiliated with the Assemblies of God. It stands as a beacon. It welcomes everyone to seek God wholeheartedly. The church is located at 4454 Lennox Blvd in Inglewood, California. It continues to serve its community. It shares the Good News through learning, listening, praying, and working together. It’s a place to believe, belong, and become.
