“A church that could be seen from all over the parish” Father Nugent envisioned. Here we stand before Our Lady of Dolours Church in Mitchelton a testament to that vision.

Our Lady of Dolours Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. Its story begins long before its 1964 construction. The land itself boasts a rich past. William Robinson purchased it in 1864. The area transformed significantly. The arrival of the train line in 1918 fuelled Mitchelton’s growth. Military personnel and their families swelled the population. New housing estates sprung up. The need for a Catholic church became increasingly apparent.

Initially Catholics journeyed to Alderley or to a chapel in Church Road. Archbishop James Duhig saw the growing need. In 1928 he acquired land. The first Our Lady of Dolours Church was born. It was a repurposed house. The opening ceremony in 1930 marked a milestone. Archbishop Duhig spoke of Mitchelton’s transformation. It grew from a small community to a thriving suburb.

By the 1960s the original church proved inadequate. Father Nugent sought a new design. He wanted a striking building. He desired a church where the congregation felt close to the altar. The architectural firm Cullen Fagg Hargraves and Mooney answered the call. Their design was unique. It won a commendation in the Building of the Year awards. It was innovative for its time. The altar’s placement allowed for flexibility. Our Lady of Dolours became a pioneer in liturgical design. It was one of the first churches in Australia to feature a free-standing altar.

The church stands as a war memorial too. It commemorates Australian servicemen who lost their lives in war. Our Lady of Dolours Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of faith resilience and community. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. It’s a vital part of Mitchelton’s identity. And it stands proudly. A beacon on Samford Road. A true testament to vision and community spirit.
