Mining Viejas Prospect. That’s where our story begins, high in the Cuyamaca Mountains, overlooking the Viejas Valley. Viejas Prospect isn’t just a quarry. It stands as a silent witness to the history of the Kumeyaay people and their connection to this land. The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians have called this area home for generations. Their history is deeply entwined with the landscape, including Viejas Mountain, their sacred “Song-Dance” peak. Long before Viejas Prospect became a quarry, the Kumeyaay people made pilgrimages to Viejas Mountain’s summit. They honored the Sun God, In’ya, watching as it rose over Buckman Mountain during the winter solstice. The meadows below formed a natural highway, the “Camino de Secuan,” used by the Spanish to drive horses to grazing lands. This area, mapped as early as 1783, was the site of conflict and collaboration. In the 1830s, tensions rose between the Kumeyaay and settlers. Yet, by the mid-19th century, a unique period of cooperation emerged. The Kumeyaay worked alongside settlers, building roads and even contributing to the layout of what is now downtown San Diego. Viejas became a vital stop on the transcontinental mail route in 1857, bustling with activity. This era of prosperity unfortunately faded due to drought and conflict. Today, Viejas Prospect, with its elevation of 901 feet, offers a unique perspective on this complex history. While its primary function now is a quarry, understanding its location within the broader Viejas Valley reveals a deeper story. It’s a story of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring connection between a people and their land.
