Tao Shan isn’t the famed sacred mountain, Mount Tai. It’s a district in Qitaihe, Heilongjiang province. It’s a place where modern life thrives amidst echoes of the past. Tao Shan District is home to over 200,000 people. It encompasses a relatively small area of 74 square kilometers. The district is further divided into six subdistricts: Taodong, Taonan, Taoxi, Taobei, Taoyuan, and Taoshan. It also includes one town, Wanbaohe. Imagine the stories held within those streets, the lives lived within those subdistricts. Tao Shan, the district named after the peak, stands as a testament to the enduring power of place names. It connects the modern city to the natural landmark that likely inspired its name. Perhaps early inhabitants of the area saw a resemblance to the mythical Peach Peak of immortality.
