Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk down the halls of one of the oldest Chinese schools in Bandar Seri Begawan? Well, right here in front of you is the prestigious Chung Hwa Middle School. This institution has been shaping the minds and lives of Bruneian students for over a century. Founded in 1922, it started modestly as York Choi School, operating from a rented shophouse. In 1938, the school moved into a new building in Jalan Bendahara. It was a time of growth and a testament to the dedication of its founders. Even during the Japanese occupation, the school managed to maintain its importance, eventually resuming operations under a directorial system. Through the years, Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan, has become a cornerstone of the community.

It’s a school that has witnessed the ups and downs of the nation’s history. But one thing remained constant: the commitment to provide a high standard of education – a tradition that has played a pivotal role in the advancement of Brunei’s cultural and social landscape. Over the decades, the school has built a strong reputation. This reputation is reflected in the impressive number of students it has accommodated. At one point, the school even exceeded the milestone of 1,000 students. Today, CHMS is a thriving institution, boasting a teaching force of over 200 staff and a vibrant student body of more than 3,000.

The school’s success partly stemmed from the government’s financial support, which began in 1957. The subsidies helped to cover the costs of building, renovating, and running the school. But the school also received overwhelming support from its dedicated alumni. The school celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1982, with Prince Mohamed Bolkiah in attendance, and later introduced sixth-form level classes in 1986.
The school has been at the forefront of integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into its learning processes. In fact, CHMS was among the first schools to implement digital lessons, launching its website in 1998. The school has seen its fair share of major milestones. One of the highlights was the completion of the Pehin Datu Temenggong Dato Seri Paduka Lim Teck Hoo Building in 2008. In 2012, the school celebrated its 90th anniversary with a grand celebration, attended by Cabinet officials and members of the royal family, including Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. And most recently, in 2022, Chung Hwa Middle School celebrated its centenary, marking a significant milestone in its journey.

The story of this remarkable school is a story of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication to education. Chung Hwa Middle School has truly become an integral part of Brunei, a testament to its founders’ enduring vision and the dedication of those who have carried their torch. It is a school that is proud of its heritage and looks forward to shaping the future of Brunei’s youth.
