A question arises as we stand here in Seorim-dong. What makes this Seoul neighborhood so special? Seorim-dong is a district in Seoul, South Korea. It sits in Gwanak-gu. This is the southwestern part of the city.

Seorim-dong itself does not feature prominently in Seoul’s extensive history. To understand Seorim-dong, we need to look at Seoul’s past. Humans lived in the Seoul area since the Paleolithic Age. The lower reaches of the Han River were home to these early settlers. Discoveries in Amsa-dong show settlements from 3000 to 7000 years ago.

In 18 BC, the kingdom of Baekje made its capital in Wiryeseong. People believe this was within modern Seoul. City wall remains from this time exist. Pungnap Toseong is one such earthen wall. It is in southeastern Seoul.

The Three Kingdoms period saw much fighting for control of the Han River valley. Control meant strategic power over the peninsula. Silla took control in 553. They established Sin Province. Later, it became Bukhansan Province.

During the Goryeo period, Seoul grew in importance. In 1104, King Sukjong built a palace. It was near today’s Gyeongbokgung. Then, Seoul was called Namgyeong meaning Southern Capital.

The Joseon Dynasty moved its capital to Seoul in 1394. It was known as Hanyang then Hanseong. A massive wall surrounded the city for protection. The gates were opened and closed daily with ringing bells.

In the late 19th century, Seoul began to modernize. It was the first city in East Asia. It had electricity, trolley cars, water, telephone, and telegraph systems all at once. This was due to trade with countries like France and the United States.

During Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945, Seoul was called Keijo or Gyeongseong. After liberation, the city took its present name: Seoul. In 1949, Seoul expanded. It included Ui-dong to the north and Guro-dong to the south.

The Korean War in 1950 caused much destruction. Seoul changed hands four times. After the war, Seoul underwent immense reconstruction. The industrialization of the 1960s and 1970s improved living standards.

In 1963, Seoul expanded again. It annexed towns from Gyeonggi Province. High-rise buildings rose during the 1980s. Pollution and traffic became major issues.

Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics. It also was a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Today, Seoul’s population makes up 20% of South Korea’s total.

In recent times, Seoul has become more diverse. Many foreign workers and teachers reside here. In 1995, there were boundary rearrangements with Gwangmyeong.

While Seoul has changed dramatically, Seorim-dong remains a vital part of this evolving metropolis. It stands as a testament to Seoul’s enduring spirit. It connects the past with the present.
