“Did you know that Kearns was once a bustling army air base?” That’s right. This city wasn’t always the peaceful residential area we see today. Let’s step back in time to 1 May 1942. Kearns was born then. It began as Kearns Army Air Base a World War II training facility. Thousands of soldiers and airmen lived here. It was one of the largest cities in Utah for a time. Imagine the energy the sheer volume of people. The base buildings weren’t meant to last. They were hastily constructed. Many were simple frame structures covered in plywood and tarpaper.

But Kearns wasn’t just a temporary army camp. After the war the infrastructure remained. Roads and other necessities were already in place. This drew developers. Homes and businesses quickly appeared. The area transformed from farmland into a thriving suburb. Can you visualize that rapid change? The transition from military base to bustling community?

The legacy of Kearns Army Air Base lives on. A former base chapel is now part of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The old train station is a daycare center. Even a cannon from the base once stood at 40th West and 54th South. It’s fascinating to see how the past is woven into the present. It’s everywhere in Kearns.

Then came the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Utah Olympic Oval was built here in Oquirrh Park. This world-class speed skating facility is arguably the fastest ice surface on Earth. It hosted numerous record-setting performances during the games. The Oval remains a major tourist attraction and recreational hub for the city.

Kearns has seen its share of challenges too. There were disputes over annexation with neighboring cities. Residents fought to maintain Kearns’s identity and boundaries. Their efforts paid off. In 2017 Kearns became a metro township. Then in May 2024 it officially became a city.

Today Kearns is a vibrant community. Its population continues to grow. The median household income is substantial. It’s a place where history blends seamlessly with modern life. A place where the echoes of a wartime base are interwoven with the energy of Olympic dreams. This is Kearns a city with a rich and fascinating past shaping its vibrant present.
