Have you ever felt the vibrant pulse of a city’s soul beating through its art? Repertorio Español is that heartbeat for New York City. Right here on 138 East 27th Street this Off-Broadway gem has been a beacon of Hispanic culture since 1968. Founded by Gilberto Zaldívar and René Buch Repertorio Español set out to share the best of Latin American Spanish and Hispanic American theatre.

Their mission wasn’t just to put on plays. It was to build a bridge a connection between cultures. They wanted to share stories that resonated with a diverse audience celebrating the richness of Hispanic expression. Robert Weber Federico joined two years later as Resident Designer and Associate Artistic Producer. He remained with Repertorio until 2022 becoming Executive Director. He oversaw decades of groundbreaking work.

Repertorio’s early days were marked by a remarkable ensemble. Talented actors like Yolanda Arenas and Ofelia González graced their stage. González notably became the first actress to win an Obie Award without performing in English. The addition of Pilar Rioja in 1973 further enriched their performances. In 1980 Musical Director Pablo Zinger created a musical ensemble that brought zarzuelas operas and musical anthologies to life.

But Repertorio didn’t rest on its laurels. In 1984 they started commissioning new plays by Hispanic American playwrights. They pioneered an infrared simultaneous translation system in 1991. This system allowed non-Spanish speakers to fully appreciate the depth and beauty of the performances.

Repertorio Español’s achievements extend beyond its productions. They presented the world premiere in Spanish of Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Ana en el trópico. The play’s cast included stars like Francisco Gattorno and Denise Quiñones. The theatre has received numerous accolades including the 2011 OBIE Award for Lifetime Achievement and a 1996 Drama Desk Special Award.

This isn’t just a theatre. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of art. It’s a place where tradition and innovation converge where languages blend and cultures connect. It’s a vital part of New York’s cultural landscape. Repertorio Español continues to captivate audiences. It continues to nurture talent and celebrate the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic culture. This theatre isn’t just a place to see a play. It’s a place to experience a legacy. A legacy that continues to inspire and transform.
