Whispers of ancient stones and forgotten castles. This is Shankill. Right here before you lies a landscape steeped in centuries of history. A place where the echoes of battles and the murmur of monastic life still linger. Shankill’s name itself hints at this rich past. It means ‘Old Church’ in Irish a testament to the enduring legacy of faith in this coastal Dublin suburb.

Imagine a time long before the modern houses and bustling streets. Picture Archbishop Luke clearing forests around 1230. His vision transformed the land establishing a manor. Shankill then was a strategic location. Fortified gates guarded it against the Gaelic Irish. The manor thrived for a time. A century later however native Irish forces overran and destroyed it. A large garrison was later reinstated. The land was eventually re-let for grazing.

The Lawless family rose to prominence in Shankill’s history. In 1408 they controlled Shanganagh. By 1480 several branches of this powerful family resided in Shankill. Between 1400 and 1600 fortified structures emerged. Shankill Castle Shanganagh Castle and Puck’s Castle stand as silent witnesses to this era. The Walsh family added more defenses in the 16th century.

The 17th century brought further changes. The native Irish were subdued. Agricultural use of the land increased. Shankill became part of Rathmichael parish. The Walshes lost their land due to the Act of Commonwealth. The Lawless family regained control. The last Lawless died in 1795. Sir William Domvile then inherited the lands.

Sir Charles Compton William Domvile a ruthless landlord dominated the 19th century. He drastically altered the land’s use. He evicted over 100 tenants. Many ended up in the Rathdown Work Union. This workhouse is now Loughlinstown Hospital. Domvile’s actions halved Shankill and Rathmichael’s population. His ambitious plans for Georgian-style housing failed. He ultimately went bankrupt.

Benjamin Tilly a neighboring landowner helped some evicted tenants. He granted quarter-acre holdings. These holdings formed Tillystown along Shanganagh Road. By 1871 over 60 houses stood. This eventually became modern Shankill. In 1911 New Vale a development of laborers’ cottages appeared.

Shankill today blends its ancient roots with modern life. Ancient castles stand alongside modern houses. The Dublin Mountains Way trail begins here offering stunning hikes. Shankill’s story is not just about stone and mortar. It is about people resilience and the enduring spirit of a community. It is a tale that unfolds with every step you take along its streets. It awaits your exploration.
