In 1922 a humble wooden structure arose. This was the very first First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. It stood on land donated by Mr Alfred White. He had a vision for his community. He wanted to bring people together.
The First Unity Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t just a building. It was a beacon of hope. It was a place of refuge in a time of hardship. The church stood amidst trails not streets. There were no streetlights either. The early years were tough. The church used kerosene lamps for light. An iron stove provided warmth. Drinking water was stored in jelly jars inside a wooden keg. Even basic facilities were lacking. An outhouse served the congregation’s needs. A large bell summoned worshippers each Sunday. This same bell tolled sadly when a member passed away.
Reverend Samuel Preston Miller was the first pastor. Under his guidance the small wooden church grew. He was succeeded by Reverend “Jumping Jack” Williams. Then Reverend O.S. Stephenson led the congregation for a time before moving on.
Tragedy struck. A nearby house fire destroyed the original wooden building. This led to the construction of a new stronger one. The fourth pastor Reverend John Watkins oversaw this project. He was a small man but a powerful force for good. The congregation worked tirelessly. They toiled during the day and then worked on the church until late at night. Even the children pitched in.
Reverend Rufus Williamson became the fifth pastor. He served for 25 years. Reverend Joseph Thompson followed him. He too served for 25 years.
Elder C.J Long became pastor in 1984. He had a powerful vision for the church. Under his leadership the current edifice was built. The C.J. Long Fellowship Hall was also constructed. The church thrived. They purchased a van and additional property. Membership grew significantly.
In 1998 the church paid off its mortgage. A huge accomplishment. This was celebrated by the entire congregation. Reverend Sylvester Robinson became pastor in 1999. He served for three years. His sermons drew large crowds every Sunday. Reverend Danny C. Osborne followed him in 2003 before resigning in 2006.
In 2008 the current pastor Reverend Bruce E Garmon Sr arrived. He’s a dynamic leader. He has inspired a new wave of growth. New ministries have been established including a Greeters Ministry and Adult Praise Dancers. The church continues to thrive. It’s a testament to the faith and dedication of its members. It’s a place where the spirit of community still flourishes. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith in Los Angeles. The First Unity Missionary Baptist Church continues to serve as a beacon of hope.
