A scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to Erwang Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a monument to ingenuity and devotion. Erwang Temple stands proudly on the banks of the Minjiang River at the foot of Mount Yulei.
For over two thousand years Erwang Temple has honored Li Bing and his son. These remarkable men designed and built the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. This system revolutionized the Chengdu Plain transforming it from a land plagued by floods and droughts into a fertile and prosperous region. The Song Dynasty posthumously crowned Li Bing and his son kings a testament to their enduring legacy.
The temple itself is a breathtaking sight. First constructed during the Southern and Northern Dynasties it was later rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. The expansive wooden complex covers 50000 square meters. It’s divided into two sections. The east boasts beautiful landscaping. The west houses the impressive palaces and halls.
Inside the main hall you’ll find statues of Li Bing and his son. The walls hold carvings of Li Bing’s water control wisdom. One inscription reads When the river flows in zigzags cut a straight channel. When the riverbed is wide and shallow dig it deeper. This simple yet profound advice guided generations of water managers.
Erwang Temple has witnessed both triumphs and tragedies. The 2008 Sichuan earthquake severely damaged the temple. The entrance gate crumbled and several halls collapsed. The Qinyanlou a magnificent viewing point overlooking the Dujiangyan Irrigation System was destroyed. Reconstruction efforts continue to this day.
Despite the hardships Erwang Temple remains a place of reverence. Local people continue the tradition of honoring Li Bing and his son. They hold annual memorial ceremonies. June 24th and 26th are especially important dates. These are believed to be the birthdays of Li Bing and his son. During these days the Erwang Temple Fair takes place. A vibrant celebration of local traditions the fair attracts thousands of visitors.
