Frontera Park. A place where the echoes of the American dream resonate. This park in Maspeth, Queens, isn’t just a patch of green. It’s a testament to the life of Frank Frontera. He arrived from Italy in 1883 with his wife and child. Frontera Park stands as a tribute to his contributions to the community. He served the Maspeth Volunteer Fire Department for an incredible 68 years, finally retiring at the age of 91. He ran a local barbershop and instilled a strong work ethic in his children. His son, Alexander, later founded the Maspeth Federal Savings and Loan Association. Originally, this very spot housed the Maspeth Bus Garage for the New York Transit Authority. In 1955, the city acquired the land. Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, recognizing the neighborhood’s need for recreational space, championed its transformation into Frontera Park. Moses, also heading the Bridge and Tunnel Authority, cleverly integrated the park’s construction with the Long Island Expressway project. The initial budget of $150,000 provided for a playground, basketball and handball courts, and a sitting area. The park was named in Frank Frontera’s honor in 1958, a fitting tribute to a man who truly embodied the spirit of his community. Years later, in 1990, Frontera Park underwent a significant renovation. Nearly $650,000 revitalized the park with new play equipment, landscaping, and safety features. Sprinklers, lights, and exercise units were also added, ensuring the park remained a vibrant community hub. So next time you’re in Frontera Park, take a moment to appreciate its rich history. It’s more than just a park. It’s a living testament to the enduring legacy of Frank Frontera, a man who built his American dream right here in Maspeth.
