“Signum Fidei” or “Sign of Faith”. That motto encapsulates the spirit of St. Peter’s Boys High School. The institution stands tall in the West New Brighton area of Staten Island.
St. Peter’s Boys High School’s story began in 1839. It started with the dedication of St. Peter’s parish. The school officially opened in 1917. Three Christian Brothers arrived and founded it on Richmond Terrace.
However, the Brothers withdrew due to World War I in 1920. Father Joseph Farrell and local clergy stepped in to run St. Peter’s Boys High School. Ten years later in 1930 the Brothers returned.
In 1937, St. Peter’s Boys High School gained a new status. It became a junior college of Manhattan College. This partnership lasted until 1943. Then St. Peter’s relocated to its current campus. It is located at the corner of Clinton and Henderson Avenues.
Fast forward to 1965. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York offered help. They assisted in funding a new gymnasium and auditorium for St. Peter’s Boys High School.
But challenges arose again. In 1969, St. Peter’s faced imminent closure. The community rallied. Their support saved the school.
St. Peter’s Boys High School has maintained a strong alumni network. The St. Peter’s High School Glee Club and Seton Chorale Alumni organize an annual Christmas concert. This event raises scholarship money. It honors their late instructor Carl Lesch.
As of the 2019-2020 school year, St. Peter’s Boys High School had 466 students. The school is affiliated with the Christian Brothers of St. John Baptist de la Salle. It is a member of the Catholic High School Athletic Association.
The curriculum is rigorous. It includes religion, English, history, and math. Students also study science, language, art, music and physical education. “Scholars students” must complete at least two years of Latin.
Many notable figures have walked these halls of St. Peter’s Boys High School. Teddy Atlas III became an American football scout. E.J. Anosike and O.D. Anosike excelled as basketball players. A.J. Pero made his mark as a drummer.
In June 2024, a piece of history was lost. The original brothers’ residence building was torn down. It was a tragic loss for Staten Island.
Despite changes St. Peter’s Boys High School remains committed to its mission. It strives to nurture mature men. They should achieve their academic potential and embody Christian values. They should also recognize their civic responsibilities. The school continues to educate young men of faith and integrity.
