Planned to promote tourism, the Congress Center Hamburg stands before us. It is more than just a building. It’s a landmark that has shaped Hamburg’s cultural and economic landscape since its opening on April 14, 1973.
Imagine stepping back in time to the opening ceremony. It was a grand affair with 3,000 attendees. However, the speaker system failed creating two hours of noise. Despite the rocky start, the Congress Center Hamburg quickly established itself. It became a modern convention center.
Initially, the Congress Center Hamburg faced some criticism. Some called it a bunker due to its lack of windows. Ironically, this design appealed to military representatives during the Cold War. They feared spies and appreciated the building’s security.
Over the years, the Congress Center Hamburg expanded to meet growing demands. These expansions weren’t without controversy. Some worried about the impact on the adjacent Planten un Blomen park. In 2000, the foyer and restaurant annex received an overhaul. Then, in 2006, Hall H opened adding a roof garden to the complex.
In 2014, a contest was held to redesign the Congress Center Hamburg. Tim Hupe Architects won. The initial cost was projected at 194 million euros. During renovations in 2017, workers discovered polychlorinated biphenyls and asbestos. This discovery led to further work and increased costs.
The renovation aimed to modernize the building and increase its capacity. Workers retained the heritage-listed brick walls of the main theater and aluminum jug lights. The old foyer was replaced with a multi-story one. It features large glass windows and the world’s largest pendant light. A passage was added parallel to the halls. This allows different events to occur simultaneously.
The renovated Congress Center Hamburg reopened in 2022. The final cost was 297 million euros. The asbestos contamination and COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the increased expense.
The Congress Center Hamburg has a rich history of hosting significant events. It has been the venue for the Chaos Communication Conference and Eurofurence for many years. Political figures like Helmut Kohl, Angela Merkel, and Willy Brandt have all given speeches here.
Beyond conventions, the Congress Center Hamburg has also hosted concerts by world-renowned artists. Queen, ABBA, Hans Zimmer, and Deep Purple have all graced its stage. Udo Jürgens even had a bathtub installed in one of the cloakrooms. He simply didn’t like showering.
Located near Planten un Blomen, the University of Hamburg, and the Hamburg Dammtor station, the Congress Center Hamburg is easily accessible. It connects directly to the Radisson Blu Hotel Hamburg. The hotel opened in 1973 and was renovated in 2009.
Today, the Congress Center Hamburg boasts a total capacity of 105,000 square meters. It features over 50 rooms and can accommodate up to 12,000 people. The roof garden on top of Hall H is the largest in Europe.
Operated by Hamburg Messe und Congress, the Congress Center Hamburg continues to be a vital hub for events and gatherings. Its halls like Hall 1, Hall 3, Hall 4, Hall G, Hall X, Hall Y, Hall Z and Hall H offer various capacities for all types of events.
