Envision a place where the forest meets the city, that’s Dongjiang in Guilin. Dongjiang is a suburb with a story etched in every street. I am excited to share some of its amazing history.

Once upon a time Guilin was settled by the Baiyue people. That was before the Qin dynasty. The Qin dynasty established the first administration around Guilin during campaigns against Nanyue. The commandery became the origin of Guilin’s name.

Guilin became Gui Prefecture in AD 507. Lingui County was later established at the modern site of Guilin. Guilin prospered during the Tang and Song dynasties. It became a vital link between the central government and the southwest border. Canals were built to transport food from the Yangtze plain.

In 1921, Guilin played a role in the Northern Expeditionary Army. This army was led by Sun Yat-sen. By 1944, Guilin’s population had exploded. It swelled from 70000 to over 500000. Refugees poured in during World War II. Intellectuals and artists sought refuge here.

Guilin was a cultural hub. It hosted famous figures like Guo Moruo and Mao Dun. It also hosted Ba Jin, Tian Han, Xu Beihong, and Feng Zikai. The city was bustling with creativity and resilience.

After the war, in 1950, the provincial capital shifted to Nanning. Yet, Guilin remained significant. In 1981, Guilin was recognized for its historical and cultural importance. It became a priority for preservation.

Today, Dongjiang in Guilin continues to evolve. It is a key part of Guilin’s seventeen county-level divisions. Guilin stands as a crucial transportation hub. This is due to high-speed rail connecting it to major cities. You can travel from Guangzhou to Guilin in just a few hours.

Guilin is known for karst formations shaped over millions of years. The Li River flows through the city adding to its charm. The city has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. It has short mild winters and long, hot, humid summers.

Guilin’s population includes diverse ethnic groups. The Han, Zhuang and Yao contribute to its culture. Citizens speak Mandarin in the urban area.

Economically Guilin thrives with varied industries. These industries include food processing and modern technology. Guilin Rice Noodles are a local staple. Don’t forget to try the Lipu Taro Looped Meat.

As you wander through Dongjiang, remember its layers of history. The history includes ancient settlements and wartime refuge. It also includes cultural flourishing and modern growth. Dongjiang is not just a suburb, it is a living story. It is a testament to Guilin’s enduring spirit.
